THE CHUPPA

y friend Karen has had us all make a chuppa. She arrived from America with yards of white silk which we cut out on the workroom table, made in 1860 from the cypress trees in this 'English' Cemetery. I printed out in Kelt font the names of the bride and groom's ancestors and we penciled these through the cloth. Then gave the pieces to the Rom in Florence to embroider with gold thread, paying them for their work. These Rom are Muslim from Kosovo. So my friend asked the bride if this was all right. Her reply, 'I guess this is world peace'! Then three ancestral wedding dresses were added to the whole, knitting earth and sky, death and life, woman and man, Jew, Christian, Muslim, past and future, together as one 'Peace'. Shalom.
