JBH

Daniel Dumitrescu's drawing of a newspaper, dated 19 May 2008, showing friendship between a Rom and Silvio Berlusconi is sensational! Next to it we show Daniel and Vandana building a wooden rocking cradle for their about-to-be-born child. Their dream is to build a house on land they own in Romania - where there is no legal work for Rom who lack decent housing - and live there. Which is why they come here, being willing and able to work, living very simply, only to be blocked by similar Italian laws. The Aureo Anello Association is encouraging them to rebuild their houses in Romania co-operatively, each family helping the others, thus reducing costs, while earning the money to buy materials through doing temporary restoration work in Italy. Much of the current hysteria in Italy is due to growing poverty amongst all, which scapegoats in turn the poorest and most defenceless minority present in the country, a minority that is without a country, without an army, without power, but which is strongly based on the family, on skills, that are not allowed to be practiced, and on beauty. The Rom were Holocaust victims who never received reparations. Their language is Indo-European and they came from India centuries ago to Europe with their music and their skills in working in metal. One can see in these drawings how well tools are known and understood, and how their houses are built and roofed - if they can buy materials. In Romania the Rom were slaves of the monasteries from the Middle Ages until the nineteenth century. The Rom assimilate the religions of the countries they inhabit, in Romania being Romanian Orthodox and strictly observing the Friday and the week-before-Easter fasts, pregnant women and nursing mothers especially abstaining from milk and meat on those days. See Daniel's fine drawing of a church. The Romanian Rom are European citizens. However,
illiteracy is widespread, many families being too poor to send their children to school, and their Romany language, though the Rom are Europe's largest minority, is not a recognized official language in the European Union. That recognition and the creation of school books such as this one could help restore us to our common humanness. The letters in which it is written are those invented by Semitic Phoenicians millenia ago. We are all culturally one family. The Holocaust was a crime against humanity. JBH
